Zodiac Signs

Traits of all 12 signs

Your sign is set by where the Sun stood in the sky at the moment you were born. The year divides into twelve thirty-degree segments, and your birth date falls into one of them. This is what people mean in everyday speech by "my sign" — the Sun sign.

Each sign carries an element (fire, earth, air, water) and a ruling planet. The element sets the general temperature of the temperament: fire signs move fast and push forward, earth signs are concrete and patient, air signs are mental and communicative, water signs are intuitive and deep. The ruling planet says which direction that temperament runs in.

The twelve pages below give each sign's date range, element, ruling planet, strengths, difficulties and how it behaves in relationships. If you also know your birth time, your rising sign changes the picture considerably — for that you need a natal chart.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my sign?

Your birth date is enough. Check which range below your date falls into. If you were born on a boundary day — where one sign ends and the next begins — your sign can depend on the hour, and a natal chart gives the exact answer.

Why aren't the sign dates the same everywhere?

The moment the Sun crosses from one sign into the next shifts by about a day from year to year, because a year is not exactly 365 days. That is why boundary dates vary between sources. Born mid-range it makes no difference; born at the edge, the birth hour decides.

What is the difference between the Sun sign and the rising sign?

The Sun sign follows your birth date and describes your core character. The rising sign is whichever sign was climbing the eastern horizon at your birth hour, and it describes how you come across. When the two differ, people usually meet the rising sign first.

What is the element for?

The element sorts the signs into four temperament groups, and most compatibility logic starts there. Signs of the same element understand each other easily; fire supports air, earth supports water. Between fire and water, or earth and air, more translation is needed.

The zodiac signs originate in Babylon. Babylonian astronomers observed and recorded the sky over centuries; the zodiac, which divides the Sun's yearly path into twelve equal 30-degree sections, took shape in the 5th century BC. The oldest known personal horoscopes were written in 410 BC in Babylon and Nippur.

Horoscopic astrology, based on the sign rising at the moment of birth (Greek hōroskopos, “hour marker”) and on twelve houses, developed in Hellenistic Egypt, around Alexandria, in the 2nd or 1st century BC. Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos, written in the 2nd century, was translated into Arabic in the 9th century and became the most influential source of medieval Islamic astrology; the works of Abu Ma'shar (787–886), born in Balkh, were translated into Latin in the 12th century and reached Europe.

At the Ottoman court, the office of chief astrologer (müneccimbaşı) emerged in the reign of Bayezid II (1481–1512). The müneccimbaşı prepared the calendar and calculated the right hour for events such as accessions to the throne, military campaigns, weddings and ship launches; the office ended in 1924 with the death of the last müneccimbaşı. Britain's first regular newspaper astrology column began in the Sunday Express in 1930 with R. H. Naylor; in 1937 Naylor developed the format written for the 12 sun signs that is familiar today.
