The oldest and newest types of fortune telling

The practices with the oldest written traces are dream interpretation and astrology: dream books were written in Mesopotamia, and in the 5th century BC the zodiac was divided into twelve equal signs in Babylon. The rising sign and the horoscope, based on the moment of birth, developed in Hellenistic Egypt. Seeking answers with dice or knucklebones was known in ancient Greece and Rome; its richest traces are 2nd-century inscriptions in southern Anatolia.

Some of the best-known types today are younger than people think. Tarot was born as a game in the 1430s and only became a fortune-telling tool in the 18th century. Coffee reading is thought to have emerged after coffee reached Istanbul in the 16th century. The Katina deck grew out of a 2002 Greek novel and was printed in 2004, angel numbers spread with a book published in 2005, and today's rune-reading method is based on a 1982 book.

The “Fal” (fortune telling) entry of the Turkish TDV Encyclopedia of Islam lists gazing into water and mirrors; lead, embers and incense; and shoulder-blade, coffee and bean divination as common types among Turks. Here is a short description of the types for which BakFal has no tool:

Shoulder-blade reading
Done by examining the shoulder blade of a sheep or goat. It is known among the Turks of Central Asia, the Mongols, Arabs, Greeks, Romans and some Balkan peoples; among Turks it existed before Islam, and it is still done today in some livestock-raising areas of Anatolia.
Water and mirror gazing

Lead, embers and incense
The shape molten lead takes when poured into water, or the look of embers or incense smoke, is examined. In popular belief, lead pouring is mostly associated with the evil eye.
