Coffee Reading Symbols and Their Meanings

Where you look in the cup changes the meaning

The same symbol reads differently depending on where it sits. When you find a figure, first look at where it is.

The bottom of the cup

The past and roots. Figures here speak of what is behind you, or what still exerts a pull.

The middle

The present. Signs about the stretch you are living through appear here.

The rim and the lip

The near future. The closer to the rim, the sooner it arrives.

The handle side

You and your home. Figures near the handle are about you directly; far ones, your surroundings.

Animals

Bird

News. In flight, good tidings approaching; at rest, an awaited answer running late.

Fish

Abundance and luck, usually financial. More than one points to unexpected gain.

Snake

Someone to be careful of. Jealousy, talk behind your back, or a matter not yet visible.

Horse

Speed and movement. An unexpected but welcome turn; galloping, a journey close at hand.

Cat

Intuition and independence. Sometimes a relationship you weigh carefully before trusting.

Dog

A loyal friend. Someone is looking out for you without your knowing it.

Butterfly

Change and relief. A hard chapter closing and giving way to an easier one.

Nest

Making a home: family, a settled order. Points to a new house or a new beginning.

Spider

A plan built patiently. It may be your own web, or a trap set for you.

Tortoise

Slow but certain progress. There is something you should not rush.

Rabbit

A fast-moving opportunity. You may need to act quickly not to miss it.

Eagle

Rising and wide vision. A distant goal, a promotion, or recognition.

Bee

Industry and shared effort. Work done inside a group is about to pay off.

Ant

Small but constant accumulation. A gain saved up patiently, or a wearying grind.

Owl

Wisdom and warning. It recalls a truth you have been declining to look at.

Lamb

Innocence and a need for shelter. A new and still fragile beginning.

Objects

Key

A door opening. A solution to something long stuck, or a fresh opportunity.

Ring

Commitment: a promise, engagement, marriage or formal agreement. Broken, a possible parting.

Coin

An expected payment or gain. Scattered, a warning about careless spending.

Ladder

Step-by-step ascent. A promotion, an exam passed, or work advancing gradually.

Ship

A distant journey or a large decision — usually a move that changes life's course.

Car

Movement and control. A period in which you draw your own route.

Book

Learning and research. Open, knowledge to be gained; closed, a secret being kept.

Clock

Timing. It says a matter needs the right moment, neither early nor late.

Umbrella

Protection. Trouble is coming, but you are prepared to meet it.

Bag

What you carry, or what you have saved. A full bag is the return on your effort.

Crown

Recognition and success. Your work is being seen; you will stand out in something.

Letter

News arriving. Long-awaited information or an official document.

Scissors

Separation or cutting loose. A tie or habit that needs ending.

Pen

A written agreement or decision — or the wish to author your own story.

Needle

Repair and delicacy. Carefully mending a relationship that had frayed.

Mirror

Looking at yourself. A warning that what you see in another is really yours.

Chain

A bond, or being bound. Whole, a strong union; broken, a release.

Chest

A kept secret, or an opportunity not yet opened.

Nature

Tree

Putting down roots: a firm foundation and long growth. Bearing fruit, your effort rewarded.

Mountain

The large goal or obstacle ahead. Surmountable, but it asks for patience.

Road

A journey or a new direction opening. Forking, a choice is approaching.

Sun

Clarity and openness. A tangled matter is resolving; things fall into place.

Moon

Intuition and what is hidden. A crescent is a beginning, a full moon a ripening process.

Star

Hope and luck. Something you have wished for grows more likely.

Cloud

Uncertainty. A matter not yet settled, too early to decide on.

Flower

Love and good news. In bloom, a growing bond; in bud, only the beginning.

Sea

Large feelings and depth. Choppy, a turbulent stretch; still, peace.

River

Life's current. It says to stop forcing something and let it move.

Leaf

Renewal and a small piece of good news. Many leaves, a fertile period.

Fire

Passion and energy. Sometimes anger that should be put out sooner rather than later.

Lightning

Sudden, jolting news. An unexpected break that clears the way in the end.

Rainbow

Clearing after the storm. Hope arriving on the far side of a hard stretch.

Plenty and the fruit of labour. A harvest long awaited.

Solidity, or a stubborn obstacle. Shifting it will take force.

Hand

Help or collaboration. An open hand gives; a closed one holds back.

Eye

Someone is watching. Attention or the evil eye; you are being asked to stay alert.

Heart

Love and matters of feeling. Whole, a solid bond; cracked, a hurt.

Face

Someone decisive in your life. Turned toward you, approaching; away, moving off.

Baby

A new beginning. As likely a project needing care as an actual birth.

Two figures

A partnership or an encounter. Side by side, harmony; facing off, a disagreement.

Foot

Setting off. A concrete step to take, or a movement drawing near.

Hair

Strength and identity. Long, gathering strength; cut, the close of a chapter.

Tear

Release and relief. A feeling held in finally finding words.

Arm

Support and strength. An outstretched arm means someone will help you.

Finger

Pointing the way. A sign trying to catch your attention — or an accusation.

Shapes and structures

Door

A new start or a choice before you. Open, the opportunity is already there.

House

Home, family and order. A move, a change of house, or a family development.

Bridge

Crossing and reconciliation. A link to be built, or a distance to close.

Triangle

An unexpected development. Pointing up, luck; pointing down, delay.

Circle

Completion. A cycle closing, or an agreement honoured.

Cross

A burden or a duty. A stretch that asks for patience and lightens at the end.

Zigzag

An up-and-down process. Not a direct route, but one that still arrives.

Dot

A small but clear development. Many dots: scattered interest and divided attention.

Tower

A height reached alone. A period where success and solitude arrive together.

Arch

Passing a threshold. A ceremony, a celebration or a formal step.

Wall

An obstacle or a shelter. The question is whether to climb it or stay behind it.
