What is a rising sign?

The rising sign (ascendant) is the zodiac sign that was rising over the eastern horizon at the moment and place you were born. While your sun sign describes your core identity, the rising sign is traditionally linked with first impressions, outward manner and how you approach new situations. It is an astrological tradition, not a scientific measurement of personality.

How is the rising sign calculated?

From the exact UTC moment of birth and the latitude and longitude of the birthplace, the sidereal time and the real obliquity of the ecliptic are worked out; the point where the ecliptic crosses the eastern horizon gives the ascendant, which falls in one of the twelve 30-degree signs. The sky positions come from a well-tested astronomical library.

Why is the birthplace needed?

At the same UTC moment the horizon line differs at different longitudes and latitudes, so the same birth time in two cities can give a different rising sign. For places that are not in the list you can enter the coordinates yourself. For borderline results a professional chart with exact coordinates is useful.

How are historical time zones handled?

Daylight-saving practice has changed over the years, so today's UTC offset is not applied to old dates. The browser's IANA time zone data resolves the real historical offset on your birth date. For reliable data the tool accepts 1970 and later.

What if I do not know my birth time?

Because the rising sign changes about every two hours, a reliable calculation is not possible without a birth time. In that case the tool does not produce a made-up or approximate result.

Why might another tool give a different result?

The coordinates used, the exact minute of birth, the historical time zone or the daylight-saving choice can differ. This tool uses the chosen city's centre and the IANA rule in force on your birth date. To find your other signs, see the zodiac sign calculator and the moon sign calculator.

Is this fortune telling?

No. The position of the Sun, Moon and horizon is calculated astronomically; what each sign is said to mean comes from a cultural tradition. It does not determine your personality or your future and is not a scientific classification. Do not base important decisions on it.
