What is rune reading?

Runes are an alphabet used between roughly the 2nd and 8th centuries to write Germanic languages. Its oldest form, the Elder Futhark, has 24 letters, and each rune has a name with a meaning: fehu is cattle and wealth, isa is ice, sowilo is the sun. In rune reading the runes are drawn from a bag and the meaning of their names is used as a prompt for thinking about a topic. Many of today's methods were reinvented in the 20th century, so treat this as a modern reflective game rather than an ancient practice.

What about reversed runes?

Some methods read a rune that lands upside down (merkstave) differently. BakFal does not use reversed readings: every rune is read with its own theme, upright. Some runes, like Isa and Dagaz, are symmetrical and cannot be reversed anyway.

Is this a real prophecy?

No. The runes are drawn at random; the readings describe traditional meanings tied to the names of an alphabet's letters and give no information about the future. They are not medical, legal or financial advice.
